Once upon a time there was an Apple Tree that loved a little boy very much.
That is how one of the most classic illustrated stories begins, written by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree — in Greek, Το δέντρο που έδινε — is perhaps the author’s best-known work. This edition is a collectible release, newly translated by Angelos Angelidis and Maria Angelidou.
The story describes the relationship between the apple tree and the child through all stages of their lives. When the child is small, he visits the Tree every day: he swings from its branches, rests under its shade — and the Tree is happy. But as the child grows, he asks more and more from the Tree, while spending less time with it.
Every day the boy came to the Tree: he picked its apples, climbed its trunk, swung from its branches. And the Tree was happy… As the boy grew, however, he continued to ask more and more, again and again… And the Tree gave, and gave, and gave… and its heart was glad.
It is an allegory with many meanings for readers of all ages. Some read it as a tale about the value of selfless friendship; others see it as a parable of unconditional, limitless parental love; still others interpret it as a metaphor for the relationship between humans and nature.
This classic and deeply beloved book by the once-unconventional author continues to move both children and adults. It is a hymn to selflessness and also a tender allegory about life, growth, and the changing needs of a person over time.
