Charleston, South Carolina, 1995. Fifty-year-old Elinor Miller, daughter of a rich family and widow of wealthy banker Emerson Miller, is racist to the extreme, cruel and callous, even when it comes to her own children. Eight years earlier, she had an accident that trapped her in a wheelchair. She does not accept to have black domestic staff, but even her white staff abandon her as they can’t bear her offensive behavior. Her daughter, Harriet, who takes care of her, can’t bear that her mother uses her as a servant. Her middle son, Ernest bears can only just bear her, but her youngest, William, barely has any ties to her. That is, until the day that Victoria, a young woman of mixed-race, appears at the mansion begging for a job. Not having another choice, Elinor takes her in.
Victoria, a very special woman, slowly begins to penetrate Elinor Miller’s cruel heart, revealing some well-hidden secrets that shock everyone around her, even herself.
